Intro to IDPA

TCSL welcomes new shooters to IDPA!

Come out and try IDPA at one of our “Intro to IDPA” classes.

IDPA offers a good opportunity for “Concealed Pistol License” holders to practice fundamental self-defense skills in simulated “self defense” scenarios.

The “Into to IDPA” session will introduce you to all the rules of IDPA matches. There will also be scenarios set up for you to try out what each shooter would see and do at a typical match.

When are Intro to IDPA classes offered in 2024?

  • “Intro to IDPA” sessions will be held on match day in May and July.

How much is it?

  • Cost is $35 for non TCSL members, or $25 for TCSL members.

Do I have to be a member of TCSL to shoot in the “Intro to IDPA”

  • NO – This special IDPA session is open to the public.

How do I register for a class?

  • Registration will be on this web site at the REGISTER tab (at the top of the page).
  • Registration opens up on the last day of the month before the match (e.g. registration opens on March 31st for the class in April, May 31st for the class in June, etc.)

What can I expect?

  • The first half of day is spent reviewing the Rules of IDPA – and what to expect on the range.
  • You will learn the safety and competition rules, as well as all the range commands.
  • You may bring a lunch, or a pizza lunch will be provided during the classroom session (for a $5 donation).
  • In the afternoon, You will get to shoot the actual courses of fire being used for the match that day.  Your score will not be recorded, but you will get to shoot exactly what the competitors are shooting that day.
  • This is an action shooting sport, designed to help keep shooters keep practiced and proficient in defensive handgun skills.  Our matches consist of at least 5-6 Courses of Fire (or “CoFs” as they are called).  These are a series of simulated defensive scenarios that let you shoot at targets at typical defensive distances.

These course of fire will let shooters:

  • Draw from “concealment”

  • Shoot while moving

  • Use appropriate cover while engaging targets

  • Shoot from kneeling or prone positions

  • Shoot at “moving” targets

  • Practice emergency (slide lock) reloads

  • Practice tactical reloads

What equipment do I need?

  • Service type pistol or revolver of 9mm/.38 special or lager caliber. If your handgun is suitable for self-defense use, it will probably be competitive for IDPA matches.
  • Practical concealed carry type holsters are stipulated for IDPA use. A common service pistol or revolver such as a Beretta 92F, Glock 17/22, Sig 226/320, Colt 1911A1, S&W 686 or Ruger GP-100 carried in a common pancake style holster that covers the trigger guard is all that is needed to be competitive in IDPA matches.
  • You should also bring two extra magazines (or speed loaders) and two magazine holders for your belt.
  • Concealment Garment
  • At least 150 rounds of ammunition

These matches are a lot of fun – and I look forward to seeing you on the range!
